Where is Luray Caverns?

Luray Caverns is nestled in Page County, northwestern Virginia. It’s the largest cave on the East coast and one of the most visited caves in the United States.

It’s a very doable trip from DC, Northern Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina with lots to do in the area.

How do you get to Luray Caverns?

The easiest way to get to Luray Caverns is by car.  Unfortunately, Luray Caverns is not easily accessible by public transportation, but it is possible with a bit of creativity. You can take the Amtrak from Union Station, in Washington DC down to Culpeper, Virginia and then take an Uber or taxi to Luray Caverns. Make sure to plan ahead because missing one train might mean waiting 3- 24 hours for another train.

How long is the Luray Caverns Tour?

Luray Caverns is about 1.5 miles long. I consider it a pretty easy walk. It takes about 45 minutes – 1 hour.

Although the website doesn’t describe itself as wheelchair accessible, it does appear to be easy to navigate for electrical wheelchair users. I wouldn’t recommend visitors on crutches because the floors can be a bit slippery.

If you’re a cave enthusiast, then it’s worth the drive. If you’re a nature lover and plan on visiting other nearby attractions, such as Shenandoah Mountain, then you’re going to love it. But if you only have a few days in Washington, DC, and don’t plan on visiting other sites in the area then I wouldn’t drive 1.5+ hours to see the Luray Caverns.

  1. So, I saw your blog and the photo and immediately thought I was going to be reading about cenotes on the Yucatan peninsula!! I had NO IDEA there were places like this in the good old USA. I would love to see the Luray Caverns in person and see how they compare to our cenotes!
