Did you know that there is a medieval-style fort in Puerto Rico called Castillo San Felipe del Morro? I visited San Juan during the WITS Travel conference and was excited to learn about this historical fort. San Felipe del Morro is a gem if you love learning about historical castles and fortresses.
Castillo San Felipe del Morro History
Castillo San Felipe del Morro was commissioned by King Carlos V of Spain in the 16th century. Enslaved Africans and a dwindling Taino population worked under the hot sun to build the fort. It served as a crucial military stronghold to defend the Spanish colonial port of San Juan from seaborne attacks. Its strategic location allowed it to guard the entrance to San Juan Bay and protect the city from enemy invasions.
El Morro symbolizes Puerto Rico’s rich diversity, history, and resilience. It has withstood numerous attacks, including assaults by the English and Dutch in the 17th century and by the United States during the Spanish-American War in 1898. Despite its turbulent past, the fort is a testament to Puerto Rico’s heritage and identity.
Where is Castillo San Felipe del Morro?
Castillo San Felipe del Morro is located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It’s a historical fortress on the northwesternmost point of the islet of Old San Juan. I loved Old San Juan’s colonial architecture. The fort overlooks San Juan Bay and the Atlantic Ocean entrance. It’s close to many restaurants and cafes including Cafeteria Malloraca, one of the best authentic Puerto Rican diners in Old San Juan.
Del Morro Fort Tours
The best time to visit this Puerto Rican fort is in the morning. You don’t need a tour guide, but I recommend taking one to learn as much as possible. No one can tell you the juiciest historical stories more than a local historian. You can also ask them to take a few photos of you.
Castillo San Felipe del Morro Photos
Del Morro is a great place to take photos. I loved wearing my Selkie dress here. I went on a cloudy day, but it was absolutely beautiful. Bring your portable tripod and start towards the left of the fort, as there are fewer people and great ocean views.
